What the RX1 really costs
| Part | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Two arms (14x Feetech STS3215, bearings, carbon fibre) BOM sheet rows; screws TBD, not priced | $338.78 | docs.google.com checked 7 Nov 2026 |
| Two hands (8x SCS0009, 4x STS3032, bearing) - optional or two grippers instead | $165.57 | docs.google.com checked 7 Nov 2026 |
| Two grippers (2x STS3215) - optional alternative to hands | $27.78 | docs.google.com checked 7 Nov 2026 |
| Torso, 3 DoF (servos, bearings, 4040 extrusion, plates) - optional | $314.27 | docs.google.com checked 7 Nov 2026 |
| Head (3x STS3215, 2x SCS0009, Orbbec Gemini 2 depth camera) camera is $234 of this; the sheet suggests a ~$20 USB cam instead | $297.05 | docs.google.com checked 7 Nov 2026 |
| Accessories (cables, servo board, USB cable, 12V supply) | $94.98 | docs.google.com checked 7 Nov 2026 |
| Listed total | $1,238.43 |
Sheet total is $1,238.43 with every optional part, hands AND grippers both counted, and the depth camera. The headline 'under $1,000' (The Decoder) only holds if you skip options. Not included: 3D printing, screws (TBD), shipping, a PC to run ROS1. Sheet says some costs are estimated and the BOM is a work in progress.
What it is
RX1 is the first project of Red Rabbit Robotics: a human-sized, two-armed robot with head and optional torso, built from 3D-printed and off-the-shelf parts. It is plans-only (hardware repos, BOM, ROS1 package); no kit or finished robot for sale was found.
Difficulty 4 of 5. Source ~100 parts from Alibaba/AliExpress, 3D-print, laser-cut carbon fibre, run ROS1 source
What it can do
- Grip and place objects with two arms
- Be controlled remotely from a computer (machine learning) or a VR headset, per The Decoder
- Run in ROS1 with URDF, inverse kinematics demo and Gazebo simulation
